Pencil is an ethical for-profit company whose mission is to alleviate poverty, improve education, and strengthen the voice of the world's most disadvantaged by innovating new Information and Communication Technology (ICT).

 

 

We have created PASSERBY^® technology, which exploits the "social infrastructure" of everyday human activities to provide a "virtual infrastructure" for electronic communication, particularly for rural areas in the developing world. By using this electronic form of word-of-mouth, we can provide communities with rich information and communication access without any infrastructure (not even electricity) and completely free to use, all from very affordable, robust portable devices.

 

We have created SECONDVOICE^®, a PASSERBY device that provides only audio services, to provide a very low-cost, free-to-use, easy-to-learn, any-language, low-power communication system. We believe SECONDVOICE can bring myriad benefits in healthcare, primary education and small business as well as social and leisure activities to those in the developing world who may not yet have as much communication access as they'd like. For those who already have other communication devices, we can supply PASSERBY software so that everyone can get the most benefit.
